How to write a Simple Book Review

As a busy person, you like getting to key information quickly.

This is one reason that shorter reviews are usually easier and faster to write than long reviews.

Think about yourself when you scan book reviews. I’m imagining that you:

  • Like to “scan” the key information rather than read every word.
  • Appreciate brief paragraphs.
  • Want to know what the reviewer liked best about the book.

For this reason, you probably appreciate a short, easy to “scan” review that spends a single sentence or two at most discussing what the book is about and who would appreciate it.

For example:

“This is a fun, cozy paranormal mystery revolving around the murder (or attempted murder) of a competition judge that will appeal to lovers of cozy mystery books.”

Many people think every book should appeal to every book lover, but people have their preferences.

Next, you’ll want to say what you liked about the book and what makes it different from other books in that same specific genre.

For example:

“I loved the dog Jasper. He had real ‘doggie attitude’ and liked to wear cute outfits because one of his owners is a doggie clothes designer.”

You can add more sentences explaining the things you liked best about the book.

For example:

“I liked the way I got to see the Provence region of France through Nina’s eyes. It was fun seeing the charm of these villages.”

Then your final recommendation.

“This is a fun escape book for cozy mystery lovers to read on the train or bus, or anytime they need to get away to a delightful lilac-scented region.”

If you like, you can describe the specific scenes you found most entertaining. Just like you and a friend are sharing the best points of a TV show you had watched.
